Looking to Take a Creative Retreat in 2020?

By: Naomi Matlow

Are you looking to unleash and embrace your creative side in the new year? Over the years, we’ve seen many participants on Unsettled’s retreats taking time off for ‘creative sabbaticals’ — opportunities to focus on a specific creative pursuit; from drafting a new book manuscript to improving their writing, sketching, watercolor painting, and more!

All you have to ask yourself as we begin the new year is: Who do you want to be? What do you want to make? And where do you want to go?

Planning your next creative sabbatical? Take some inspiration from these stories of our fellow alumni… and begin your next adventure today!

If you need some further inspiration, take a look at what some of our alumni did in 2019 while embracing the unknown…

My Sabbatical Journey From Corporate Lawyer to Creative in Bali

“Beyond my current day job as a corporate lawyer in Sydney, I have a big creative side and have been wanting to shift more into that area of my life. I joined Unsettled in Bali this past March for an artistic sabbatical and escape from corporate life. I wanted to be inspired by the island’s vibrant places, colors, people, and culture, while also bringing these new perspectives and experiences into my drawings and paintings (and of course to meet and learn from wonderful people from around the world on their own journeys).” Amelia Horvath, Bali alum

Q&A with Fuckup Nights Co-founder Pepe Villatoro

“It might sound like a cliché but what helps me the most is working on something with purpose that helps me live with meaning. I spent more than 10 years iterating my professional life in order to avoid doing things and jobs that felt like a chore, now I feel in peace with my everyday life and my impact/peace-of-mind balance.” –  Pepe Villatoro, Bali alum

Portraits of Medellin: Through the Lens of Matt Tuapola

“I am a New Zealand-born Samoan working as a freelance photographer and travel guide. I had reached a point where I was in a creative rut trying to figure out my next project and the direction I wanted to take in my career going forward.” – Matt Tuapola, Medellin alum

Q&A with Artist & Illustrator Katie Rodgers

“I start to overthink my work so much when I stay stagnant, so it has been nice to loosen up a little here.” – Katie Rodgers, Mexico City alum
