Happy Father’s Day to all the Fathers out there!

From Dads of two-legged homosapiens to four-legged furry friends, we have had many papas join us in embracing the unknown all around the world. Cheers to the fathers and caregivers in the Unsettled community that mentor, share, and inspire us each and every day with their constant quests for awe, growth, and discovery. Sunday, June 16th marks Father’s Day in the US, and we couldn’t let it pass without saluting and celebrating all the papas that live Unsettled. Here is some fatherly wisdom from a few of the fathers in our community.

What is your greatest challenge as a father when you are on the move (with or without your children)?

To release control (even more than usual).

What are your greatest rewards as a father when you are on the move (with or without your children)?

Watching Rain soak up all the beauty this world has to offer, and all the amazing sounds and languages of course!

What is your favorite advice you give to your child?

You can do absolutely anything with the power of the mind.

What’s something you try to do every day to help you show up to the world as best as you can?

Meditate.

What is your greatest challenge as a father when you are on the move (with or without your children)?

Other parents and their kids!!

What are your greatest rewards as a father when you are on the move (with or without your children)?

When the hotel has a kids club.

What is your favorite advice you give to your child?

Ask your mum she knows.

What’s something you try to do every day to help you show up to the world as best as you can?

Phone someone when they least expect it and not ask for anything.

A current word or intention in your life: Work-Life-Adventure- Balance

What is your greatest challenge as a father when you are on the move (with or without your children)?  

Since our kids are grown and currently living and working far away (Latvia and Mexico), we don’t get a chance to travel with them much any more. When they were young, the greatest challenge was trying to plan our travel around their school vacations while avoiding all the typical, overcrowded school break destinations. Fortunately, we were able to meet these challenges  with some memorable family adventures way off the beaten track in Central America, Botswana, the more remote islands of Indonesia and Laos!

What are your greatest rewards as a father when you are on the move (with or without your children)?

There’s nothing as rewarding as sharing a real adventure with your kids and vicariously experiencing their excitement and sense of awe as they discover new places and cultures radically different from those at home.

What is your favorite advice you give to your child?

Follow your own dreams and don’t let conventional wisdom or the pointless accumulation of material goods ever prevent you from charting and navigating your own unique course toward achieving them.

What’s something you try to do every day to help you show up to the world as best as you can?

Work hard to make a difference, be honest with myself and others, maintain a sense of humor, treat others with respect and dignity and try my best to maintain a sense of decency and integrity in a chaotic world.
