Are Harry & Meghan Living the Unsettled Life? We Think So…

By: The Unsettled Team

Give them a break!

At Unsettled, we don’t blame the ex-Duke and Duchess of Sussex for seeking a life of freedom, mobility, and independence beyond the confines of Windsor Castle. In fact, their decision represents everything we stand for. Trading their royal titles and leaving ‘The Institution’ has everything to do with the trends that we’ve seen for years.

They are seeking an unconventional approach to living and working, and the thing is, every person has to face this decision at some point in his or her life. Whether we’re aware of it or not, at some point (maybe even on a daily basis), you have to take a hard look at the expectations that your family, friends, and society at-large has placed on you. Harry and Meghan may be an extreme case in many regards, but who doesn’t have expectations from their parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, friends, and society to follow a “chosen” path in their career. Or to buy a home and settle. Or even where you should live (usually in proximity to those who are placing these expectations on you). Or to have children or not, too.

These are personal decisions at least as much as they are family or societal matters.

To break these norms and to step outside of these expectations… Well, it ain’t easy.

If you’ve done this yourself, then you may have experienced some of the harshest criticisms of your life. Your family might not understand. Your friends think you are crazy. Your career path may come into question. But if you’ve made this choice or are thinking about making it, then we applaud you.

We applaud those who take the courage to pause for a moment and who are intentional about these choices. We applaud you for even thinking about if the expectations from your family matches what you want out of life. There’s no right or wrong conclusion, only the right path for you. Everyone in your life will have opinions, and for Harry and Meghan, we can only imagine how much our infatuation with their decision has magnified the pressure on them.

Harry and Megan, we applaud you for thinking deeply about the life that you want to live, for telling your loved ones about how you feel, and for living unsettled.

If you’d like to learn how our Virtual Retreat can help you think through a decision like this and how to weigh how you want to live versus the expectations of everyone around you, then drop us your email here and we’ll invite you to an upcoming webinar next week to learn how you too can live with more freedom, independence, and mobility.
