UNSETTLED LIFESTYLE INCUBATOR

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR VIRTUAL RETREATS

Welcome! Unsettled’s Lifestyle Incubator is our first ever “virtual retreat”, and we’re sure that you’ll have some questions around this online course. Have a read below, and if something isn’t clear, you’re always free to shoot us an email at hello@beunsettled.co and we’ll get right back to you!

The Essentials

What is Unsettled's Lifestyle Incubator program about?

We believe life is one great adventure into the unknown. Knowing how to be intentional and navigate towards what you want next may be the most fundamental tool you ever learn.

Unsettled’s Lifestyle Incubator program – our first ever “virtual retreat” run entirely online – will give you the time, space, tools, and community to navigate through your next transition with intention and clarity… without leaving home.

Through original content, live sessions, group coaching, and daily inspiration, Unsettled’s Lifestyle Incubator will help you identify the core tensions between the lifestyle you want and the career trajectory that aligns your values, interests, and skills.

Whether you’re working full time, taking a sabbatical, or going through an intentional career transition, this experience is designed to help you break out of your routine and think more deeply about your life and career trajectory.

What is a "Virtual Retreat"?

A “Virtual Retreat” is a lot like an online course, however, it’s much more collaborative, interactive, and it’s a shared experience. Like our regular Unsettled retreats, we create an environment where people can connect and find as much meaning and growth from the connections they make as the content and structure we provide. All content will be delivered digitally, through a mix of live video conferences, recorded sessions, offline exercises and tools, and a community chat and content sharing platform that will be active throughout the experience.

How much of a time commitment is required?

Our one month program runs from November 15th – December 15th. For this program, you can expect to dedicate 9 hours per week. Not all of this is live – there will be on average 2 live sessions per week (~1.5 hours each), and the rest will be more asychrnous or offline. The program is meant to be spread out throughout the weeks with some light weekend and evening committments.

Our two-week accelerated program runs from January 3rd – January 15th. It’s the same amount of content and work as the month-long retreat, but it’s condensed down into two weeks. You can expect to cover about 15 hours over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (so not completely full days but definite time commitments on the weekends) and a few hours at your own pace during the weekdays.

What’s the structure of the Virtual Retreat?

The Virtual Retreat will be divided up between “Live Sessions” and “Offline Sessions”. Around half the content is delivered synchronously via a Live Session that is facilitated by the Unsettled team and half the content is delivered to you via offline exercises asynchronously that we send to you. Additionally, we will have a Slack group that will incorporate into many of the exercises we do, and that’s also for you to use, ask questions, share your work, and engage with as you wish.

We’ve designed this program to be flexible but thorough in its delivery. There are plenty of extras we’ll be thowing in, and as always with Unsettled, it will be a co-created and iterative experience, meaning we design for you – the participant – to get the most out of the program, and will adapt based on what we discover along the way.

What time will the Live Sessions be?

The final decision will be made once the program is full, and these Live Sessions will even be recorded for those who cannot make each one. With that said…

For the November 2019 program, the Live Sessions, which last ~1.5 hours each, will take place approximately:

  • On two weekdays per week, at 6pm EST / 10pm GMT
  • On Sundays at 10am EST / 2pm GMT

For the January 2020 program, the Live Sessions will take place approximately

  • On Fridays at 6pm EST / 10pm GMT
  • On Saturdays and Sundays starting at 9am EST / 1pm GMT

Additional Questions

What technology/communications do I need to join a Virtual Retreat?

Your technology needs are fairly simple and straight forward:

  • Access to a computer and reliable internet (at the times above)
  • The ability to run Zoom, a popular video conferencing app that’s easy to download on nearly every device and in most countries.
  • Slack, a simple group communications platform that’s easy to understand and use, whether it’s your first time or you use it 100 times/day.
  • Ideally, a working microphone and camera on your device as occasional Live Sessions will be interactive.

Is this the right fit for me?

Unsettled’s Lifestyle Incubator is for early-to-mid career professionals who are looking to redefine their career trajectory, and find better alignment between their lifestyle, values, and career.

We don’t care where you’ve worked, where you went to school, or what professional field you’re in. What we do care about is that you are looking to be intentional about your next steps in life, and are looking for a diverse and supportive community to navigate the uncertainty ahead.

Unsettled’s Lifestyle Incubator is for those who are seeking to:

  • Design your next move. For those who want to be intentional about making a career and lifestyle change.
  • Create an independent lifestyle that has alignment between your career and your life.
  • Get a clearer picture of what’s next, and learn to reframe your story and trajectory based on what’s meaningful to you.

If you’re chugging along in your career, at a crossroads, and feel the need to stop, assess, and design your next step to make sure it’s intentional, then Unsettled’s Lifestyle Incubator is for you.

What type of content & programming should I expect?

The Virtual Retreat is a workshop-based approach to self-inquiry and lifestyle and career design. This means that the content is based on exercises, worksheets, and facilitated discussions that instigate questions, reflections, and planning towards the lifestyle and career you want for yourself next.

You can expect moments of self-reflection, talks led by the Unsettled team, and interactive sessions where you will share, contribute, and partner up with other participants in the retreat.

The program is structured into three core parts:

  • Part 1: Our approach to radical self-awareness and self-assessment that gives you maybe the best understanding of your values, interests, and goals you’ve ever had.
  • Part 2: An in-depth methodology to truly design your next career move based on your desired lifestyle and what you discovered in part 1.
  • Part 3: A plan of action that is (1) achievable, (2) will get you on the trajectory you’ve designed, and (3) that you truly believe in and come back to time and time again, along with practical tools to keep you on track and help you navigate uncertainty ahead.

Who else will be joining?

A diverse community of participants, likely from many countries, who span industries, professions, and personal journeys that brought them here, ready to be intentional about how to continue building their lifestyles and careers.

Do I need to have certain professional background to join?

No. We are all on different paths and this virtual retreat is agnostic towards your interests, skills, or career. Each participant brings their own journeys and discovers their own answers. We bring the big questions and insightful conversations.

Do I need to do anything to prepare between now and the first session?

You do not need to prepare anything in particular before the first session. We will send out orientation and pre-retreat information before we begin.

What happens if I miss a Live Session?

While we highly advise you to make all of the live sessions, they will be recorded. The more you ‘show up’ in the work ahead, the more you will get out of it.

Can I get my employer to pay for this?

We certainly hope so, but that’s ultimately between you and your employer. There have been a few of our Alumni whose employers have paid for Unsettled experiences in the past, but the case needs to be made by you. For those of us who are self-employed, it’s best to check with your accountant, but we are happy to provide a summary of the purpose and benefits of this experience for an accounting professional to determine whether or not it meets your country’s tax laws as a write off.

What's the payment process like?

Once you’re invited to join Unsettled’s Lifestyle Incubator, your spot is held as soon as you make your payment via our secure online credit card processing system, which you will receive a link to. Payments are fully refundable less a $100 processing fee up to 30 days before the experience. Up to 10 days before an experience, payments are 50% refundable. No refunds are given less than 10 days before an experience.

Does Unsettled help in finding jobs?

Our experiences are meant to give you the tools and guidance to grow both personally and professionally, and connect you with a community of people from all over the world. How you use those tools and community along your journey is ultimately up to you…
